Crypto Withdrawal Fees Compared by Network and Exchange
Withdrawal fees are one of those costs that slip through unless you check. A cheap trade can become expensive when you actually move your coins. The fee you see on the withdrawal screen is not always what the exchange decides to charge. Several factors are at play.
How exchanges set withdrawal fees
Exchanges use three basic models: flat fees, percentage-based fees, or passthrough fees. Flat fees charge the same amount regardless of how much you withdraw. This is common on smaller exchanges. Percentage fees scale with the amount. That punishes larger withdrawals. Passthrough fees simply charge you the network fee the exchange pays. No markup, no discount.
Binance and Coinbase mostly use flat fees per network. Kraken uses a flat fee for most assets. Some decentralized exchanges and newer platforms pass through the exact network cost. The difference between flat and passthrough can be large when network gas spikes.
Network choice changes everything
Your choice of blockchain matters more than the exchange itself. A withdrawal on Ethereum's mainnet (ERC-20) costs far more than the same withdrawal on Solana or BSC. The reason is simple: the exchange passes on the cost of the network's congestion.
- ERC-20 (Ethereum): High fees during peak times. Withdrawing stablecoins or ETH can cost $5 to $50 or more.
- BEP-20 (Binance Smart Chain): Generally under $0.30 for most assets. Cheap and fast.
- Polygon (MATIC): Usually under $0.10. The exchange covers part of the cost on some platforms.
- Solana: Among the cheapest. Withdrawal fees commonly $0.01 or less.
The displayed fee on an exchange's withdrawal page is the sum of what the exchange pays plus any markup. That markup varies by exchange and asset.
Coins with free or near-free withdrawals
Some networks and assets are designed to keep costs tiny. XRP and XLM (Stellar) are famous for near-zero withdrawal fees. XRP withdrawal fees on major exchanges are often zero or a fraction of a cent. XLM is similar. These networks do not use gas auctions like Ethereum. Transactions cost a fixed, minimal amount.
Other low-fee options include: - Litecoin (LTC): Usually under $0.01. - TRON (TRC-20): Cheap but not always zero. Some exchanges charge $1 flat. - Bitcoin Cash (BCH): Low fees, but higher than XRP. - BSV (Bitcoin SV): Very low, but not widely supported.
Be careful with stablecoins. USDT and USDC on Ethereum cost more than on BSC or Solana. Always check the network dropdown before confirming.
Why the Displayed Fee Isn't Always the Exchange's Decision
Exchanges face a trade-off. They can set a fixed fee lower than the network cost and eat the difference. That is a marketing expense. Or they can set a fee that covers their actual cost plus a small profit.
When Ethereum gas spikes to 200 gwei, an exchange cannot absorb that cost on every withdrawal. So some exchanges use dynamic fees that change with network conditions. Others simply disable withdrawals on congested networks until fees drop.
The fee you see is a mix of: - What the network charges right now - Whether the exchange marks it up - Whether the exchange subsidizes it for certain users or volumes
No single number is permanent.
What you should do
Check the fee before you withdraw. Not just the number, but the network. That $0.01 Solana fee becomes $50 if you accidentally pick ERC-20.
If you hold coins on an exchange, move them when the network is quiet. Ethereum fees are lowest on weekends. BSC and Solana are consistently cheap.
XRP and XLM remain the safest bets for tiny withdrawals. For larger amounts, the percentage-based model hurts less. But always confirm. A flat fee of $10 on a $100 withdrawal is 10%. On a $10,000 withdrawal it is 0.1%.
